Gumroad FAQs
This section contains answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about Gumroad.
What is Gumroad?
Gumroad is an e-commerce platform that helps creators get their products sold. Artists and creators, including musicians, filmmakers, comedians, writers, software developers, and educators sell directly to consumers using Gumroad. Gumroad make the process of selling online as easy as social sharing, bypassing all the hassle of finding interested buyers online.
What else can you sell with Gumroad?
While this tutorial shows you how to sell an eBook, there are tons of different product types that you can sell on Gumroad, including:
- Music and videos (you can even upload several MP3 files per product to create albums).
- Subscription content, where people pay regularly for content that you email to them.
- Membership content, where people pay regularly for access to a content archive.
- Physical products, such as CDs and T-shirts.
How much does Gumroad charge?
About the only downside of using Gumroad is that they take a fairly hefty percentage of the sale compared to, say, PayPal or an internet merchant account. However, if you want an easy, hassle-free way to sell your digital products then I’d say it’s worth paying the higher fees for the Gumroad experience.
You have two main options when it comes to fees:
- Pay no monthly fee, and pay 8.5% + 30 cents per sale.
- Pay a $10 monthly fee, then pay 3.5% + 30 cents per sale. You also get some other perks, such as removing the Gumroad branding from your sales emails, custom product delivery options (so you can handle fulfilment yourself), and more.
It’s worth pointing out that the $10/month option is for up to 1,000 unique customers per year. If you have more customers then the monthly price goes up accordingly.
How can I use Gumroad to make money?
Making money as a digital creator on Gumroad is as follows:
- Create an account and set up your payout information.
- Create a product and upload all relevant files.
- Publish your product and share the link with the world via social media, your website, a newsletter, etc.
- Your followers go to that link, enter their payment information, and receive their download link.
- Gumroad verifies your account and your sales.
- Every Friday, Gumroad pay you the net amount of your sales (your sales minus their fees).
What is Gumroad Discover?
Discover recommends your products to prospective customers that browse Gumroad at gumroad.com/discover.
Products purchased via Discover will be subject to an additional 10% fee. This applies even if the customer has purchased from you before. If they buy a product from you through the Gumroad Discover search, or through a receipt link, or through any kind of referral aspect of the Discover feature, their purchase will be taxed the Discover fees.
- If you have a Gumroad premium account the fees would be 13.5% + $0.30 per sale made through Discover.
- If you are using Gumroad for free the fees would be 18.5% + $0.30 per sale made through Discover.
