Something very exciting happened in March…my website Blogging Guide was accepted to Mediavine!
I’ve written a detailed post explaining how to get approved for Mediavine on my Blogging Guide site, if you are curious.
But I wanted to do a post on my personal website, as part of my goal to better document and track my various online business ventures in 2022. This post will serve as my Mediavine income report for March 2022.
What is the purpose of sharing an income report, at all?
Motivation. It can be a little strange publishing income reports for all the world to see (including family, friends and even rival online creators). These income reports are not published to brag. Instead they are meant to be helpful and to show readers, followers and fellow bloggers that it truly IS possible to make a good income online with a small blog, hard work and persistence.
Transparency. When you’re looking for an online creator for inspiration and guidance, it’s important to understand that this creator has actually been able to accomplish goals similar to your own.
In this case, I’m trying to show bloggers what is possible, in terms of earnings, for a website that is newly accepted to Mediavine in 2022 and had just over the minimum amount of sessions required.
Yes, there are certainly bloggers who have been with Mediavine for years and earn more money than I did with my single site. But at least you know that my earnings data is (1) real and (2) current.
Remember, RPMs have changed significantly over time, and a report from a blogger in 2017 (who was accepted with the half the current required sessions, given the changes Mediavine announced last year), is probably not indicative of your earning potential today.
Scalability. I am hoping to build several more sites that are at least partially monetized by Mediavine, so it is useful for me to lay out the data, along with my thoughts/feelings at the time (so that I can accurately reflect on the mistakes and successes I experience with my additional sites).
My First Full Month on Mediavine
In my previous Mediavine Income Report, I was only able to offer partial data with regards to how much money you can expect to make as a publisher.
Ad revenue per thousand impressions (RPM) is calculated by dividing your estimated earnings by the number of ad impressions you received, then multiplying by 1000.
For reference, bloggers who monetize their websites using Google AdSense can expect to earn $.30-$2 for display ads.
Mediavine RPM in the First Few Months
Below is a screenshot of my Medivine RPM and April 2022 earnings dashboard (my first full month as a Mediavine publisher):
A few thoughts on my first month earning income through display ads as a publisher on Mediavine:
$1,033.58 is a great first month! My traffic actually dipped a bit this month, but the higher RPM compensated for that. I think going forward, there is definitely potential to reach $2K-$3K per month, just by adding some articles that I already have lined up for the next 6 months.
My data confirms what I already suspected (Mediavine offers far higher RPMs than AdSense or most other networks). For my first full month, my session RPM was $23.98. It has continued to climb as my ads have stabilized and is hovering around $30 RPM ($30 for every 1000 sessions).
This means that simply by getting my site accepted into the Mediavine network (and running their ads), I am earning 15x-120x more per month (from the exact same content)!
This income was truly passive. All income is not created equal. In the case of display ads, most of the income is going to be passive since you will constantly be paid for your site’s traffic. Yes, for some websites you will need to keep posting to maintain this momentum, but as my site traffic is almost exclusively powered by SEO and evergreen content, this is not a major consideration.
I added 10 new blog posts in April (most of which are just beginning to index), but as my other posts climb in search engine rankings over time, my income would likely stay the same (or even grow) just by letting the site “age” in Google.
Mediavine RPMs Shared by Other Publishers
While it is useful to see my own RPMs (in order to establish how much Mediavine pays per 1,000 views), this is still a very limited glimpse inside the performance of all Mediavine publishers.
RPMs can vary based a number of factors, and Mediavine has 9,000+ publishers!
So, below, I’ve included screenshots from other Mediavine publishers who have shared their RPMS. These screenshots were invaluable to me when I was considering what display ad network might be best for my own content.
Hopefully these RPMs from other publishers will help you better approximate the possible RPM for your site/niche!
Conclusion
I hope you enjoyed this Mediavine Income Report and learned a little more about Mediavine RPMs! If you are getting value out of this, let me know, and I’ll make an effort to do more of these posts!
